About the Performance
The performance explores themes of feminism, motherhood, fertility and magic. According to Ancient Egyptian mythology, Isis’s jealous brother Seth cut her husband Osiris into pieces and scattered them across Egypt. Grieving, Isis cuts off her hair, casts it into the Nile and weeps, causing a flood.
In pursuit of the impossible, she spreads her wings, collects Osiris’s scattered body and reassembles him in order to conceive their son, Horus. The project was inspired by Isis: A Play in Two Acts by Nawal El Saadawi and Isis l’éternelle: Biographie d’un mythe féminin.
The costume explores Pharaonic murals portraying mourning and funeral rituals, as well as black braided wigs. The performance begins with the grieving Isis covered by her hair in the midst of these rituals.
